Gordon Koerner encouraged the EDA to hold its workshop with the Board
of Supervisors to come to a meeting of the minds regarding economic
development efforts. He noted a recent news article included
negative comments about the percentage of out-commuters. He
requested that the EDA consider a study to gain a better knowledge of
the workforce.
V. Jean Plymale, Brandon C. Morrison and Seth Peery from the eCorridors
Program at Virginia Tech led a discussion about creating a
comprehensive broadband strategy for the County. Current and
future technologies, geography and topography, current market
penetration and coordination with the school system and private sector
service providers were outlined as the basis for further
discussion. Maureen Corum will contact Brenda VanGelder, director
of the eCorridors Program, to request that a proposal be submitted to
the EDA for their consideration. Maureen Corum will also contact
another consultant for a proposal. Bedford County and the New
River Valley have undertaken similar projects; Maureen Corum will
follow up.
Natt Hall called the meeting to order.
Motion: The minutes of the May 5, 2005 minutes be approved as written. Pritchett-Powell (6-0)
Motion: The May 5, 2005 treasurerâs report be filed for record. Powell-Wheaton (6-0)
Allen Hale reported that the southern entrance sign will be installed
in a day or two and that the Chamber has donated the old sign to the
Oakland Museum. He noted that the project has been successful
because of the cooperation of County staff, which has handled the
installations, at no further cost to the EDA. Allen Hale reviewed the
landscaping bids received. Tom Wheaton was asked to recommend to
the Authority a final landscaping plan, to include recommendations
regarding maintenance of the landscaping.
Montie Pritchett spoke to Gary Woodâs email response to the EDA
regarding the budget request and suggestions for improving ongoing
communication. Stu Armstrong suggested that the EDA set up a
monthly meeting schedule, whereby two EDA members meet with 2 members
of the board of supervisors for breakfast. Natt Hall and Montie
Pritchett volunteered to meet with 2 supervisors the week of July 11,
2005.
Montie Pritchett recommended that the EDA enhance its revenue stream by
charging a fee and annual service fee for any bonds that are
issued. Maureen Corum will consult with the Countyâs bond counsel.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
