Mardi Gras at Wintergreen Resort - Wintergreen Adaptive Ski
Enjoy a masquerade ball, a Cajun dinner, slopeside Dixieland music, costumed snowtubing races, the crowning of the King and Queen, and synchronized skiing. This annual celebration is the major fundraiser for purchasing and repairing adaptive ski equipment, instructor training and overall administration of the Wintergreen Adaptive Ski program. The Nelson Center - 7:00 pm. Earl Swift, a staff writer for the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot, and an author of several books about VA events, among them Journey on the James: Three Weeks through the Heart of Virginia and The Tangierman's Lament and other Tales of Virginia (2007) will be in Nelson County.  Included in his recently released book are three chapters that relate to Nelson County - When the Rain Came (Hurricane Camille), History Floats (James River bateau trip), and In the Radiance of Master Charles (Synchronicity on Adial Rd). Sponsors of the event are the Nelson County Historical Society, Oakland Museum and Rockfish Valley Foundation.  His brief comments about the book will be followed by a book signing and refreshments. Free and open to the public.

Mr. Swift will also speak and be honored at a reception at Elk Hill, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter A. Agelasto III on Saturday, March 29th at 10 a.m. This event is also free but space is limited and reservations can be made by calling 434.361.2251 or agelasto@mindspring.com ; Of particular interest to those who live in Nelson County is the fact that Earl Swift has written much about Nelson County, including his paperback, Journey on the James: Three Weeks Through the Heart of Virginia, and his booklet , “When the Rain Came” about Hurricane Camille and the flood of August 1969.  His most recent book, The Tangierman’s Lament and Other Tales of Virginia includes tales of some ordinary and extraordinary residents of Nelson County.  Three of his chapters include stories about the days before and after Hurricane Camille , the river bateaux that journeyed up and down  the James River, and Master Charles of Synchronicity.  Earl Swift has been a Fulbright fellow and five times nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. These events are sponsored by the Nelson County Historical Society, Oakland Museum and Rockfish Valley Foundation.
