Keep Nelson Beautiful Events
The March on Route 56
The diverse beauty of Nelson County is well represented by Route 56. This Scenic Byway crosses the County from the James River to the Blue Ridge Mountains. (picture)
Like all well traveled roads it accumulates litter. Keep Nelson Beautiful and other volunteers who take pride in the appearance of our roadsides march the entire length of 56 to do a spring clean-up.
March on Nelson
The theme of March on 56 was expanded so people all over the county have the opportunity to temporarily adopt a section of highway during the months of March and April.
James River Clean-Up
Nelson County is fortunate to have many scenic water ways including the James River. This natural resource is significant to the Commonwealth as well as Nelson County and must be preserved and protected. Friends of the James River with support from Keep Nelson Beautiful and the Blue Ridge Sierra Club dedicate the second Saturday in September to a river clean-up.
Two bateaux, the Rose of Nelson and Anthony Rucker, plus dozens of canoes and volunteers float approximately nine miles from the James River Park to the Wildlife Center. It's great fun!
Sept. 13th is the date for 2008. If you would like to enjoy a day on the river and help keep it clean, please, contact Roger at 434 263-6915. Event cancellation information will be available after noon on Sept. 12th at 434-263-7098.
