Charming Renovated 1930’s Soapstone Workers’ Bungalow
Relaxing, peaceful getaway in gorgeous Nelson County. Adjacent to a large hay field which leads down to a private branch of the Tye River, the cottage is at the end of a quiet country lane with few nearby houses. The newly renovated home was initially built to house workers from a soapstone quarry located on the property, hidden in the woods. During the remodel, we even found rationing coupons from 1945 hidden in the walls!
Comfortably blending modern conveniences with quaint, historic charm, the bungalow is clean and minimally decorated with rustic tree posts, wood clad walls, pretty quilts from Sundance, warm wool blankets from a local sheep farm, and an adorable wood burning stove. We were happily able to save the original wood floors in most rooms.
Enjoy your morning coffee on one of the two front porch swings while you listen to the birds sing. In the evening, roast marshmallows in the outdoor fire pit or chase fireflies in the hayfield until the sun goes down for excellent stargazing. Bring your canoe or kayak and drift down the Tye River, only minutes away, with a fishing rod and picnic.
Perfect for three or four responsible couples with or without children to escape to the rejuvenating countryside. Enjoy an abundance of vineyards, breweries, cideries, and distilleries are located around the county or book a massage at the Lovingston Spa. 30 minutes to Wintergreen, five minutes to Oak Ridge Estate and Lockn, halfway between Charlottesville and Lynchburg. Your host, Renee Grant, can help you plan your stay and, on request, provides worry-free advanced provisioning.
Ten can sleep comfortably on 3 Queen beds and in one loft that sleeps 4. On the ground floor, you will find two cozy bedrooms with queen beds . Upstairs, you will find a third queen bedroom and a loft with two trundled daybeds, each of which is enclosed in pretty draperies for added privacy and fun! In this loft, a wall mounted flat screen has a dvd player, but no cable so bring along some DVDs for more evening entertainment.
The rustic kitchen is well equipped with a four burner stove, dishwasher, microwave, keurig coffee maker, and all the necessities. A front loading, stacked washer dryer is available so you can wash your clothes after enjoying the great outdoors.
The two bathrooms both have glassed in showers and unique reclaimed copper sinks atop rough wooden vanities.
On winter evenings, light a fire in the dining room’s little wood stove to up the cozy factor. The dining table was handmade by one of our local characters. Then adjourn to the living room for conversation or a game of cards.
There is no wifi out here in the country, we all just use our cellular data plans. We have found that Verizon picks up well, where as other cell servers do not. The cottage does have a cell signal booster to improve the signal.
You’re welcome to enjoy a cigarette outside. However, we don’t allow any smoking in the house. Please dispose of properly so you don’t start a forest fire, per Smokey the Bear!
